Nearly two hundred thousand zebras and a million wildebeests are in the southern
Serengeti during the month of February. The female gnus are here to give birth
and all
of the grazing animals take advantage of the nutritious grass of the
short grass plain. Due to
volcanic ash these forbs are rich in calcium, a
vital and limiting nutrient for these ungulates.

In
the highlands of Tanzania is the Ngorongoro Crater, considered by most
travelers
to be the best place to view African wildlife. In this 10 mile diameter volcanic
caldera is found the best cross section of large animals left on our planet.
Here two
lionesses rest after killing and eating a Cape buffalo -not an easy
animal to hunt.
