We are following the old railroad bed of the Tidewater to Tonopah line which parallels the Amargosa River. This place is good for Zebra-tailed lizards and beaver tail cactus.

The coachwhip or red racer - Masticophis flagellum piceus - is a very fast snake which actively hunts in the day often preying on birds and nestlings. They are not poisonous but have a very fierce bite. I am a witness to that.
